Auto caption generator

An auto caption generator that gets every word on time.

Upload a clip and AutoCap writes the captions for you — each word timed to the moment it's spoken, ready to correct, style and export.

No credit card · 2 free minutes every month · MP4, SRT and VTT export

Why it matters

Typing captions by hand takes far longer than the video itself. Automatic captions promise to fix that, and most get the words broadly right — then leave you fighting timing drift and typos in a tool that was never built for editing.

AutoCap is built the other way around. Transcription is quick, but the point is what happens next: every word arrives with its own timing, sits on a timeline you can see, and can be corrected in a click before anything is exported.

What you get

Automatic where it should be. Editable everywhere else.

Captions in moments, not hours

Transcription starts as soon as your clip is uploaded, so you spend your time reviewing captions instead of typing them.

Timing for every word

Each word has its own start and end time, so animated styles highlight words exactly as they're spoken and nothing drifts out of sync.

Mistakes fixed in a click

Names, brands and jargon are where every model slips. Click a word to correct it, split or merge lines, or nudge one word's timing without moving its neighbors.

Styles that are ready to post

Clean subtitles, word pops, karaoke highlights — then adjust the font, colors and position until the captions match your brand.

Export the way you need

Burn captions into an MP4 rendered in your browser at up to 2K, or download SRT and VTT subtitle files on any paid plan.

Private by design

Only the audio is sent for transcription. Your video is rendered on your own device and is never uploaded to be exported.

How it works

Generate captions automatically in four steps.

  1. 01

    Upload your video

Drop in an MP4 or MOV. AutoCap takes the audio and sends only that for transcription.

  2. 02

    Review the transcript

Read the captions with the video playing beside them and correct anything that was misheard.

  3. 03

    Style the captions

Pick a caption style, then adjust the font, size, colors, animation and position on screen.

  4. 04

    Export

Download a captioned MP4, or an SRT or VTT file to upload to YouTube, LinkedIn or your video editor.

What makes automatic captions accurate?

Mostly, the audio. Clear speech recorded close to the speaker transcribes far better than a voice across a noisy room, and one person talking transcribes better than several people talking over each other.

A few recording habits make a real difference. Whatever the model still gets wrong — usually proper nouns and specialist terms — is a quick fix, because every word stays editable until you export.

  • Record close to the speaker, away from echoey rooms
  • Keep music and sound effects quieter than the voice
  • Avoid people talking over each other
  • Check names, numbers and product terms before exporting

Why not just use the platform's auto-captions?

TikTok, Instagram and YouTube can all caption a video for you, and for a quick post that can be enough. But the look is the platform's rather than yours, and the captions stay behind on that platform when you post the same video somewhere else.

Captions made in AutoCap belong to the video. Burn them in and they look identical everywhere; export an SRT or VTT file and you have a clean, corrected transcript you can upload anywhere that accepts one.

Open captions or closed captions?

Burned-in (open) captions are part of the picture: they always show, in exactly the style you chose, which is why they're the norm on short-form social video.

Closed captions live in a separate file that viewers can switch on and off and that platforms can read. For YouTube, LinkedIn and course platforms it's worth uploading a subtitle file as well — AutoCap exports both from the same transcript.

Questions

Good to know.

Is the auto caption generator free?

Yes. The free plan includes 2 minutes of transcription every month for clips up to 60 seconds, with every caption style and unlimited exports that carry a small watermark. No credit card is needed.

How accurate are the automatic captions?

On clear speech, accurate enough that reviewing them is a quick read-through rather than a rewrite. Accuracy drops with background noise, overlapping voices and loud music, and names or specialist terms may need correcting — every word is editable before you export.

Which languages can AutoCap caption?

English, today. Languages spoken across Europe and the United States are being added one at a time; the languages page shows what's live.

Can I edit the captions after they're generated?

Yes. Change any word, split or merge lines, adjust the timing of individual words and restyle everything. Edits never use extra transcription minutes.

How long can my video be?

Up to 60 seconds on the free plan and up to 5 minutes on paid plans. Your monthly allowance counts the length of the audio you transcribe, not how many times you export.

Do I need to install anything?

No. AutoCap runs in a modern web browser, and the captioned video is rendered right there on your device.

Try it on the next video you post.

The free plan needs no card. Upload a clip, check the captions yourself, and only upgrade when you want the watermark gone.
